Digital Tools Supporting Built Environment Management for Sustainable and Inclusive Urban Transformation in Small and Medium-Sized Cities  Hosted by Politecnico di Milano

Programme Overview

We warmly invite BSc and MSc students to apply for an exciting Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) focused on cutting-edge digital tools for sustainable urban transformation.

This interdisciplinary course—delivered by leading European universities including Politecnico di Milano, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, RWTH Aachen, Universitat Politècnica de València, and Warsaw University of Technology—explores how digitalisation and artificial intelligence can support the management of the built environment in small and medium-sized cities.

Participants will receive an ENHANCE micro-credential upon successful completion.

Description

The BIP is centered on the Management of Built Environment aspects of the sustainable Urban Transformation in secondary cities, considering all various aspects of the built environment in terms of disciplines and approach.

The BIP programme will equip students with state-of-the-art digital solutions —including digital twins, GIS, and AR technologies — to foster co-creation with relevant stakeholders in sustainable urban transitions. These digital tools will be tailored to the needs of small and medium-sized cities, which often face unique challenges and limitations in resources, capacity, and technical support.

Engineering and Architecture meet in this BIP giving the students an idea of multi-disciplinary approach. Special services for the cities will be studied in terms of functions and needs (e.g., factories, retail, hospitals, etc.).

Learning Format

  • Online Phase:
    June 22–26, 2026 (40 hours)
    Introduction to built environment management, tools, and interdisciplinary approaches
  • On-site Phase (Lecco Campus, Italy):
    July 6–10, 2026 (40 hours)
    Fieldwork, site visits, and collaborative project development in teams

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Students will work with real case studies, focusing on how digital tools such as digital twins, GIS, and AR can enhance stakeholder participation and support informed decision-making processes for advancing sustainable and green urban transformation, considering the processes of Management of Built Environment as preeminent in terms of approach;
  • Students will work on a real case where all the disciplines (from Urban to Structure, from Appraisal to Finance). This project reflects the BIP’s vision of Built Environment Management, enabling students to deliver a modern strategy for managing a complex asset within a city with special characteristics.

The 2026 edition will be also focused on digital twins as an effective tool and digital solutions for sustainable urban transformation.
