New mural compositions in the Main Building elevator shaft

Detail of the mural compositions in the Main Building elevator shaft

New mural compositions have been created across two floors of the elevator shaft in the Main Building of Gdańsk University of Technology. The works were carried out by fourth-semester undergraduate students from the Faculty of Architecture as part of the elective course Art in Space, led by Professor Jan Buczkowski and Dr. Edyta Urwanowicz from the Department of Visual Arts.

From among several proposals, two student team projects were selected for implementation. The first team - Katarzyna Adamczyk, Oliwia Bałasz, Zofia Bośko, and Paweł Czołpiński - designed a composition whose color palette evokes the tones of the building’s façade and its surroundings.

The second mural, created by Milena Nieckarz, Solomiia Pavelchak and Wiktoria Saj, features a composition of lines inspired by the silhouette of rooftops and the geometry of gable walls.

All students participated in the painting process. The work required considerable commitment not only from the students but also from the instructors, who supervised the process and directly contributed to the more technically demanding parts of the execution, where advanced manual skills and experience were essential. For the students, the project was an opportunity to gain practical skills and experience collaborative work at every stage - from concept development to final execution.

The new mural compositions are part of an ongoing, long-term initiative to introduce contemporary art into the historic interiors of the Gdańsk Tech campus.

Photos of the project can be viewed on the Gdańsk University of Technology homepage.
