Students of the Faculty of Architecture Awarded in an International Competition
Students of the Faculty of Architecture at Gdańsk University of Technology received an honorable mention in the international architectural competition "Lighthouse Hotel," organized by Terraviva Competitions. The competition task was to transform an abandoned lighthouse into an exclusive hotel. The project titled "In the back of beyond" was recognized for its innovation and for developing solutions in harmony with the surrounding context.

The "Lighthouse Hotel" competition was aimed at young architects and designers, with the goal of designing a hotel space within an abandoned lighthouse located on San Domino Island in Italy. Participants were tasked with creating a design that, while utilizing modern technologies, would also fit the identity and character of the location.

The competition focused primarily on the innovativeness of ideas that highlighted the surrounding environment and promoted sustainable development. It was important to use the available amenities provided by the location, such as natural light and local materials. Organizers encouraged the reinterpretation of the lighthouse as both a navigational space and a place for reflection, while also emphasizing how architecture can bridge the past and the present.

The project by Ms. Aleksandra Boszke and Ms. Natasza Stężycka presents a vision of a boutique hotel, offering visitors an opportunity to escape from the daily grind. The historic lighthouse on San Domino Island was designed by the authors as a place where history meets modern design, and the raw nature of the island harmonizes with sophisticated architecture.

The project involves restoring the lighthouse and adapting it into a relaxation space. The Adriatic Sea is visible from every part of the building. Minimalist solutions, muted colors, and the use of natural light create an atmosphere that fosters calm and regeneration.

The competition entry emphasizes the "slow life" philosophy. The program of the building includes interactive culinary workshops, allowing visitors to experience local culture through all the senses. This is further supported by the available wellness area in the building.

We encourage all interested parties to review the competition results on the organizer’s website.

We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Ms. Aleksandra and Ms. Natasza and wish them further success!
