The success of a graduate student from the Faculty of Architecture

Ruins of the Bodzentyn Castle
The Diploma of the Year Award from the SARP (Polish Association of Architects) was granted to Mr. Wiktor Olszewski for his diploma thesis titled " Understanding Space, Space Understood. A Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Center Located in the Ruins of the Castle in Bodzentyn” written under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Eng. Arch. Jakub Szczepański.

It is worth mentioning that Mr. Olszewski is also a finalist in the Competition for Young Architects organized by Builder for the Future. This is the second recent recognition of our students’ work.

The diploma thesis focused on the need for the revitalization of the ruins of the castle in Bodzentyn, which became the subject of further research and design work. As part of the design process, the author addressed the issue of conservation activities undertaken on historical buildings located in small towns. Mr. Olszewski carried out an inventory of the ruins, subjecting them to a detailed analysis, which particularly caught the attention of the competition jury.

The project proposes minimal intervention in the historical structure of the building. By creating a space stripped of unnecessary decorations and raw in its simplicity, the author created an architecture that serves as a background for the historical ruins of the castle. The historical value of the building was highlighted, and its functionality was restored by introducing a new structure into the existing one, while preserving the original compositional intentions.

As part of the new functional program, a center for psychoanalytic psychotherapy was planned. Taking into account the context and character of the building it became a kind of solitude, where the main role is played by the relationship between the individual and the surrounding architecture.

We sincerely congratulate Mr. Wiktor and wish him continued success in his professional career.
