New Mural at Gdańsk Tech

We are pleased to announce that a new, inspiring mural has appeared on the Gdańsk University of Technology campus. Students from the Faculty of Architecture, under the guidance of Professor Jan Buczkowski and Dr. Edyta Urwanowicz from the Department of Visual Arts, created it on the walls of the staircase in the Nanotechnology B building. This is part of a larger project aimed at incorporating contemporary art into the spaces of our campus.

The first such project was a painting on the staircase in the Main Building in 2011. Subsequent years brought compositions in the elevator shaft (2019), a large-scale mural for the 70th anniversary of the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications (2022), and paintings in the hall and lecture room at the Faculty of Management and Economics (2023).

Collaboration and Execution

The current project was carried out in cooperation with the authorities of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology as part of elective classes. The first stage involved design work conducted in eleven small teams. The task for the students was to design a painting composition considering the dynamic directions set by the graphite handrails of the stairs, the strong light pouring into the interior of the emergency staircase, and the color scheme of the building's facade.

Competition Results

The competition jury selected the best proposals prepared by the teams:

  • Maria Jóźwiak and Natalia Kowalska (1st place)
  • Monika Dębkowska, Aleksandra Drobińska, Jagoda Jasińska (joint 1st place)
  • Patrycja Lis, Tomasz Marszalec, Wiktor Matwiejuk (joint 2nd place)
  • Karolina Kozłowska, Marta Małkowska (joint 2nd place)

Creative Process

A total of 30 students participated in the project. After preparing the surface, the design was drawn to scale, the contours taped off, and then the painting began. Students had to adapt to working on a large surface, using paint rollers instead of brushes. Working in an open, public space was not only an artistic challenge but also an opportunity to learn cooperation and sacrifice personal ambitions for the team's goal.

The result of weeks of work is a painting composition that harmoniously integrates the building's interior with its surroundings, bringing the colors and light of nature into the world of technology. The mural is a projection of the colors and light of nature, merging them with technology.

We congratulate all the participants in the project and thank them for their dedication!
