International seminar and workshop organized as part of the AURUM programme and the SUP&ER - Solar Urban Performance and Energy Efficiency project implementation.

An international research workshop on energy-efficient solutions in architectural and urban design will be held from 3 to 5 June at the Faculty of Architecture, Gdansk University of Technology, in the Hydromechanics Building. The workshop is funded by the IDUB AURUM Supporting International Research Team Building project.

The event will bring together around 30 invited scholars and practitioners from Brazil, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy and Poland, among others.  As part of the AURUM grant, a team of researchers from the Gdansk University of Technology under the direction of Dr. Eng. arch. Justyna Martyniuk-Pęczek, prof. of the academy, composed of dr hab. inż. arch. Karolina Krosnicka, Prof. of the university and Dr. Natalia Sokół, together with invited guests, will hold a scientific workshop on the concept of urban energy efficiency and the use of daylight in urban planning. The optimised use of solar energy is one of the key issues in this area, and the aim of the workshop is to propose research solutions and attempt to answer how modern urban design can contribute to reducing energy consumption in buildings and improving the living comfort of residents. During the workshop, the international research team SUP&ER (Solar Urban Performance and EneRgy efficiency) will present partial results of analyses of selected development complexes in terms of spatial energy efficiency.

The workshop will kick off with an open seminar on 03 June. These unique open lectures will be given by two world-class experts in urban lighting - Roger Narboni and Niko Gentile. The event will be held under the theme: ‘Two views on day and night lighting in cities’. All students of the Faculty of Architecture are cordially invited to these lectures.

On the following days, 4-5 June, the closed part of the scientific workshop will be held at the Faculty of Architecture of the Gdansk University of Technology, in the Hydromechanics Building. During the workshop, the international research team SUP&ER (Solar Urban Performance and EneRgy efficiency) will present partial results of analyses of selected development complexes in terms of spatial energy efficiency. This research will include an assessment of the location, surroundings and use of solar energy, all of which are key in the quest to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The workshop will run over three days, giving the research group the opportunity to forge strong bonds and develop collaborative approaches. It will begin with lectures open to the public, to which you are cordially invited. We encourage you to follow the progress of our research and participate in future initiatives that will contribute to more sustainable and energy-efficient cities.

You are cordially invited to attend the seminar on 03 June 2024!

Two views on day and night lighting in cities - Roger Narboni and Niko Gentile - open lectures

Everyone interested in the topic is warmly invited to attend a seminar on June 3rd.

These unique open lectures will be given by two world-class experts in urban lighting - Roger Narboni and Niko Gentile.

Monday, 3 June, Hydromechanics Building, Creative Room:

10.30 - 11.15 - Roger Narboni - The future of city nights: how to decarbonise the public lighting?

10.15 - 12.00 - Niko Gentile - Negotiating Daylight

Roger Narboni, a French lighting designer, introduced the concept of Luminous Urbanism in 1987 and founded the lighting design studio CONCEPTO near Paris in 1988. With more than 30 years of experience, he has realised more than 130 lighting plans worldwide. Narboni is known for his expertise in urban lighting planning and lighting strategies for cities.

Niko Gentile, assistant professor at Lund University, is an expert in lighting and daylighting. He combines technical and observational assessments, drawing on building physics, environmental psychology and architecture. His research concerns the evaluation of lighting systems from a user needs perspective. He is co-author of the book Daylighting and Lighting under a Nordic Sky
