Ministry of Economic Development and Technology PRIZE | The Faculty of Architecture at the Gdańsk University of Technology

The dissertation defense entitled Architecture in Extreme Environments. Polar Stations took place on July 7, 2020. At that time also the RD Architecture and Urban Planning of the Gdansk University of Technology issued a decision to award the degree of doctor with distinction. The thesis supervisors were Dr. hab. A. Styszyńska, prof PG and Dr. hab. inż. arch. J. Martyniuk-Pęczek, prof. PG.
The dissertation, entitled Architecture in Extreme Environments. Polar Stations, synthesizes existing knowledge about objects and architecture in polar areas. It identifies risks, threats and limitations to the functioning and autonomy of polar stations arising from extreme climatic and environmental conditions. Identifies the regularities, trends and principles of polar construction. Formulates conclusions on the most relevant technical issues related to the design and implementation of polar habitats, optimal spatial and functional arrangements of polar stations that may arise in the future.
To a significant extent, the multidisciplinary value of the study has been developed thanks to the author's multidisciplinary education of several levels. At the same time, the dissertation supervisors are specialists coming from seemingly distant fields, which are Geography and Architecture and Urban Planning.
